Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, At Malfoy Manor, Snape informs Voldemort of the date when Harry’s friends plan to move him from Privet Drive to a new safe location, so that Voldemort can capture Harry on the way.
While packing to leave Privet Drive, Harry reads two obituaries for Dumbledore, which make him realize that he didn’t know Dumbledore as well as he thought. He then bids farewell to the Dursleys for the last time, as Voldemort’s threat forces them into hiding as well.
The Order of the Phoenix arrives to escort Harry to his new home, the Burrow. Six of Harry’s friends drink Polyjuice Potion to become his duplicates, and they all fly in different directions. Death Eaters, tipped off by Snape, attack Harry and his friends. Voldemort pursues Harry, but Harry’s wand seemingly acts on its own to repel Voldemort.
Harry arrives at the Burrow and learns that Moody was killed and George Weasley was maimed in the chase. Harry starts having visions of Voldemort’s actions and witnesses him interrogating a wand-maker, trying to learn how to defeat Harry.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione gather the books and tools needed to carry out the mission Dumbledore left them: to find and destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes, objects in which Voldemort has hidden parts of his soul to achieve immortality. The Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, arrives to deliver Dumbledore’s bequests: Harry receives the Snitch he caught in his first Quidditch match and a sword of Gryffindor, which Scrimgeour claims is not Dumbledore’s to bequeath. Ron receives a Deluminator, a device to capture and release light, and Hermione receives a book of magical fairy tales. They don’t understand the significance of these items.
The Weasleys host the wedding of their son Bill and Fleur Delacour. During the reception, Harry overhears Ron’s Aunt Muriel spreading rumors about Dumbledore’s dark past and about his family. The wedding is disrupted when news arrives that Voldemort has taken over the Ministry of Magic.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione apparate to a busy street in London and are soon attacked by Death Eaters. They find refuge at 12 Grimmauld Place, Sirius Black’s old house, and learn that R.A.B. refers to Sirius’s deceased brother, Regulus Arcturus Black, who was a Death Eater but had a change of heart and stole one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, a locket. The locket was stolen from the house by Mundungus Fletcher.
Harry summons Kreacher, the house-elf, who explains that the locket was taken from him by Dolores Umbridge. The trio infiltrates the Ministry of Magic disguised as employees and recover the locket from Umbridge. However, they accidentally bring a Death Eater into the protective enchantments at Grimmauld Place, forcing them to abandon the house and continually move from place to place, camping in the wilderness.
Harry starts having visions of Voldemort searching for a powerful wand. At one point, they overhear goblins discussing that the sword of Gryffindor in the Hogwarts headmaster’s office is a fake, leading Harry to realize they need the real sword to destroy Horcruxes. Ron, frustrated by their lack of progress, leaves the group.
Harry and Hermione go to Godric’s Hollow to visit his parents’ graves and the house where they died. They are attacked by Nagini, Voldemort’s snake, disguised as Bathilda Bagshot, and barely escape. Harry’s wand is broken in the struggle.
Long Summary And Plot Of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Book
While on watch, Harry sees a Patronus in the form of a silver doe, which leads him to a frozen pond where Gryffindor’s sword lies beneath the ice. He retrieves the sword but is nearly drowned by the Horcrux locket until Ron returns to save him. Together, they destroy the locket with the sword.
The trio visits Xenophilius Lovegood, who explains that the symbol they have been seeing represents the Deathly Hallows: the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Invisibility Cloak. According to legend, whoever possesses all three becomes the Master of Death. Xenophilius betrays them to the Death Eaters in an attempt to save his kidnapped daughter, Luna, but they manage to escape.
Harry continues to have visions of Voldemort’s quest for the Elder Wand. The trio is captured and taken to Malfoy Manor, where Bellatrix Lestrange tortures Hermione for information about their mission. With the help of Dobby, they escape, rescuing other prisoners including Ollivander the wandmaker and the goblin Griphook. During the escape, Dobby is killed.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione plan a break-in at Gringotts bank, with Griphook’s help, to retrieve a Horcrux from Bellatrix’s vault. They succeed and escape on a dragon, later destroying the Horcrux, Hufflepuff’s cup, with Gryffindor’s sword.
Harry has a vision that another Horcrux is hidden at Hogwarts. They return to Hogsmeade, where Aberforth Dumbledore helps them enter the school. They gather Dumbledore’s Army and search for the Horcrux, eventually finding it in the Room of Requirement. During the battle, Ron and Hermione destroy the Horcrux, Ravenclaw’s diadem.
Harry learns from Snape’s dying memories that he must die to destroy the part of Voldemort’s soul within him. He surrenders to Voldemort, who seemingly kills him. In a limbo-like state, Dumbledore’s spirit explains that Harry can return to the living world or move on. Harry chooses to return and feigns death.
The battle at Hogwarts resumes, and Neville Longbottom kills Nagini, Voldemort’s last Horcrux. Harry reveals himself and defeats Voldemort in a final duel.
Nineteen years later, Harry is married to Ginny, and they have three children. Ron and Hermione are also married with children. The series ends with their families seeing off their children as they depart for Hogwarts.
